Barnard used the 91 cm refractor telescope at Lick Observatory and was the first new satellite of Jupiter since Galileo Galilei's discovery of the Galilean satellites in 1610.

This is one or two irregular dwarf galaxies. They’re known as the Small Magellanic Cloud, but recent studies suggest it may be a pair of galaxies lined up behind each other.
You can just make out some nebulae inside. Those are giant star forming regions, caused by the Milky Way trying to pull the SMC to bits with its gravity.
The bright spots are globular clusters, a bit closer to home. The top one is 47 Tucanae, the smaller one on the left is NGC362.
