Yeah you know what concepts are similar? Different names, different model numbers for things, things that are related to _but different from_ what I searched for.
If I search for "morgan", a result for "morton" is a bad result. If I search for "atari ste", a result for the atari falcon is bad.
Vector spaces have been very effective since the late 1980s *IF* they're used in circumscribed domains (e.g. law, galaxies), *AND* the seed "system vocabulary" (can be images, etc.) is well chosen, and its internal relationships well done.
I don't know how/what outfits like Google are using for feedback to generalize, but it's just as dumb as everything else they do.
also people will fall back to more general queries if the first search returns nothing. you don't have to collect similar concepts for users, this is an inherent behavior of searching for a thing, they'll do it themselves! and do it better because they know the actual context!
I swear half the degradation in websearch these last few years isn't due to content farming and SEO spam, it's purely that search engines collectively decided that people were searching with the wrong words, and that giving them results that are loosely about the broad chunk of concept space near the thing they asked about is better than giving them what they fucking asked for.

Thanks. I've had the same feeling. When I search for something I long for something like logic operators (AND, AND NOT, OR, and any combination of these) which should be a simple concept to grasp. You know what you are looking for and what to exclude ... I faintly recall that search engines used to support this. It's not even expensive to implement. And yet... optimization of results seem to indicate that this is not how the majority perceives and uses search engines.
my biggest pet peeve with search, and DuckDuckGo's particularly aggressive nature about it is one big reason I stopped using them for search by default
Yeah, ever since I did some reading on tokenization related to search, I've been convinced that over-flattening data via tokenization is why search results have gotten worse. Gives you stuff that more generally matches results, instead of the more specific results you are hoping for. And I suspect it is biased towards LLM produced content since they use a similar idea to produce their content, meaning it will match at a higher rate when search engines tokenize and index the page.
though that's only one of the many factors. One I've been really angry at recently is search engines pretending results they have in their index don't exist.
A good example was searching for a technical "word" that *always* comes in pair, searching for one floated up 3 results, searching for the other, 7 results, for both together? 6. I didn't look too carefully, but I think the end-result is there were more than 7 total results it knew of. In addition to what I know it should have known about because of *other* searches returning those words, which is how I ended-up searching for them.
I've had better results mirroring websites locally and then grepping through them compared to the other options.
I knew we were fucking doomed the first time I encountered this by searching "chess the musical" and having Google go "hmm no I think you just meant to type chess, it has more results, here's results for chess"
💯 And at first when they used it mainly to fill in when there were no usable results on the primary query, it seemed clever and good. But some jackknob has always got to keep turning the crank till it's broken for everybody.
I suspect part of the reason is people are not searching for something to buy all the time, and there are no specific adverts to show them for "atari ste" or "sodium lithium alloy melting point"
If the business model is selling ads, you have to persuade advertisers their ads are being "targeted" so you enshittify the search to include related but useless things to hang ad impressions on.
Yes, I agree; even putting the term in quotes resulted more and more in “results” with synonyms (at best); which, for technical terms, can have a completely different meaning.
Not even GitHub's search can search for an exact string.
Given how it's very well known that code doesn't really care about what kind of punctuation you use if any, and is always case-insensitive, just makes perfect sense from a UX perspective.
Might have something to do with that time Google's Head of Ads more or less staged a coup, eventually replacing the former Head of Search, who'd been with Google since 1999, and refused to make search worse in service of the Ads team making the proverbial line go up.
@dymaxion I agree there should be an opt out, sometimes you can using quote. On the other side, searching exact match starting in the middle of a world is hard complexity because you cannot index it efficiently.
I've been feeling this strongly for years now. Just searched for a term "A" I didn't know much about. Got many results about another term "B". Including one whose summary said it was a discussion of the many types of "B". Great, looks like "A" is a type of "B" and the web page will explain how? Nope, after reading the entire page, no mention of "A" at all. The algorithm found some relationship between "A" and "B", but it can't direct me to anything about "A" even when asked directly.
And sorting stuff by the letters it contains, in any order. One of my cars' telephone book did that. if I enter the letter A, I expect names starting with A, not random names containing the letter a.
