Going viral is overrated* - a mini-thread
(*prays this post doesn’t end up on Explore)
Yesterday one of my toots (about the need to bust the myth that there is no engagement on the Fediverse) ironically went viral.
It was the top post on Explore for hours and ended up getting 255 boosts, 494 likes and dozens of comments (as of now).
And you know what? It made me realize that
✨ there’s something beautiful in staying small ✨
because you can build genuine connections with others… (cont’)

Social media companies created a market for creators to depend on their platforms and the platform model effect to make money. Going viral serves the purpose of enrichment, not real engagement.
Fediverse seems to be more about serving a different purpose, which is to connect and engage with people in meaningful ways. this is the reason I loved early twitter and fell out of love with it once the algorithms took over.

It disappears as quickly as it appeared. And, in 99,9% of the cases, that doesn’t change anything in your life (except making you thirsty for more virality if you are that kind of person).
Ok, I must make a strong exception for the viral tweet (10k retweets) that allowed me to meet my wife

In other words, if someone is following you, but is not mentioned in your reply, they won't get that reply in their home timeline.
There is one exception, I believe, which is when they are following both you and the author of the toot you are responding to. Then it will pop in their timeline, apparently.

Just to be clear, when I post my own toot, not as a reply, I switch it manually to Public.
But having a "safe default" setting in the form of "Quiet public" removes a potentially pile-on-inducing foot gun when I reply. 😉

Good to know!

Thank you for this info. I do see less pile-ons after my replies when I use Quiet public, but I might just switch to Followers-only for replies if that is the case.
