And then commercial companies rolled in and tried to expand the market (ISPs) and capture it (retail, advertisers). The transition from "usable" to "utterly cluttered with ads" wasn't instant, so you likely remember the short time when non-academic hobbyists had a field day before larger commercial products were established.
My biggest regret? Google Search used to be actually good. Even with the three initial sponsored links.
While I'm venting, phones! Cellular phones used to make calls, send texts, flip, have an antenna and fit in my pocket.
The didn't play music or games, or show me cat videos, or constantly spam me with phishing attempts and campaign begging.
And now they want to put ML/AI into my phone. I get needing a smart phone, even some apps are tolerable, but the cruft is so onerous it makes the whole thing feel like an unwelcome brick in my pants pocket.
almost as long as the web has existed marketing people have been trying to take advantage of it. The pop-up ad phase was horrendous as was the keyword spam stage. The web wasn’t pure for long (I miss the days of manually curated directories, hand-coded html and link rings!).
