guess it's just appeasing the powers that be now.

Possible. But I also know one of these which is my own childhood friend and even tho he works in a thinkthank/uni professor in international laws he's to make a paper on AI in his field but his knowledge on the topic is extremely limited and the knowledge on who he's depending to fill the gap seems to be also limited as I brought him new basic perspectives on the subject last time we saw each other.

at a party i met a nuclear physicist and he blabbered about how easy it is to write python and that he could take any programmers job.
your friend sounds more reasonable listening to others :)

I think that's mainly because it's so abstract from what they're used to that they can even fathom what it is. I'm still trying to make a pedagogical model that most can understand but it's hard to not go into the details, so far my best example is to show do an adder with logic gates then point out how big is a 8 bit adder relay and I ask if they can try to imagine what you can do with billions and billions of transisors instead of around 150 relays.
Then I think another reason is that all computers sold are under the feudal commercial model of microsoft/apple and that they suppressed proper third party market to be able to have something else than the current sandbox.

Als Antwort auf bonifartius • • •that everything is MS or apple certainly doesn't help BUT i started doing computer things with qbasic bundled with the DOS on my parents computer.
people now can just download ANY of the free programming languages or install GNU/Linux. there are so many free resources now, yet most people just don't care. computers aren't easy and the problems they solve aren't easy. it just reduces overall quality to cater to people who don't want to learn anyway, which is why i'm against it.

i guess it has it's uses. only the hype and hyperfocus of academia is telling me that these people might not be as smart as they think 🤷♀️

blockchains are actually using mathematical zero knowledge proofs in production
interesting things are happening

Als Antwort auf Fish of Rage • • •@sun @anemone @scathach @teratology there sure are interesting things developed by people really deep into these things!
i feel that nearly everyone else is just following hype, especially if from other disciplines.
i also feel that there are much more interesting applications for the highly parallelized hardware. no one (i'm aware of) cares to develop parallel algorithms, instead throwing AI on their problems hoping the giant statistical system will produce usable solutions.

Als Antwort auf bonifartius • • •@bonifartius @teratology @anemone @sun I honestly find modern AI really boring compared to the "dead end" algorithms from the 70s
Like, the insanely high dimensional tensor fuckery that goes on inside neural networks is really cool from a mathematical perspective, but from a CS perspective the sheer brutishness of it is shamefully inelegant

yes, it's just not elegant. i think beautiful or clever algorithms are peak CS and with AI everything is reduced to brute force.
