The issue with IPFS is that in the browser it is *slow*. It does work, but it's too slow for most visitors to endure.
Regarding a more broad question of hosting important documents on IPFS: it's pretty involved to make any kind of *Private* IPFS infrastructure, so these would have to be *public* documents. There is also no way of *removing* files from IPFS.
generally when using IPFS as a storage layer, one needs also something else – DNS, IPNS, etc – as a "resolution" layer.
IPFS is content-addressed. Files are addressed using a hash of their contents.
So if you need to point people to an updated version of a file, you have to somehow update how you're pointing them to it, it's simply not a thing to make the same IPFS address point to a modified/updated file.

51% said DuckDuckGo, 12% Startpage, 9% Ecosia and 4% Qwant. Only 6% said Google and 1% Bing. 17% said they preferred another search engine, with many mentioning Kagi and Mojeek.
This is quite different from what the market share out there is, which shows how unique you all are here in the Fediverse. You make your own choices and do not follow everyone else. Be proud.
@rigo I think it is quite clear that Google dominates the search market today with Bing being in 2nd place (excluding some local search engines). This is in line with all reports I have seen.
I think it is great that people here dare to look for something else.
I'm unsure about the "something else". Because qwant uses the bing-base and many others do to. Startpage is just a front-end to google.
But I agree that many people HERE look at a diversity of engines and that is a good thing. But IMHO none of them really use the full potential of the web, but rather cater to a certain business model.
For the fun: I was admin of a legal altavista in 1997! ;) It had MUCH better precision & recall than anything you'll find today.
@rigo Even though many of the search engines use the same search back end, there is still a difference in the results and in the level of privacy. It is IMHO great that people use these smaller search engines.
It is also great that there are search engines that build their own index. It is a tough nut to crack, but great to see people trying and I hope they succeed!
In some ways the larger search engines are getting worse each day with more and more auto-generated content dominating the results. Clearly that is not what most of us want, so maybe there is an opening.
I agree with you that early days Google, Alltheweb and Altavista in many ways provided better results than what we see today.
Not directly tied to Fediverse, but I find myself searching via DDG for some specific terms more often as Google just spits blurb of unrelated links. @Vivaldi
No surprise here. Here, at Fediverse, we are a representative sample of highly educated, privacy-oriented, technologically-aware, counterculture of nerds and geeks. Unfortunately though, we are not a representative sample of average internet users.
I have something more interesting to say. I didn't, but would vote for Other implying SearXNG. It is self-hostable metasearch engine. I absolutely love it, it even allows searching on specific sites like Wikipedia, Pinterest, Wallhaven, Youtube, Peertube, and many-many others.

i don't have a favourite. my devices and browsers default to google. i struggle to find a reason why this is a bad thing. so, not my favourite. i don't have one. i don't see why i should have one.
check out Stract dotcom. It's a really good, "Google from the early 2000s" project that let's you specifically filter searches by things like "academic/research papers", etc. Clean, untampered results.
I try to use @Mojeek as much as possible. I do use Brave as a backup tho. Setting aside how people may feel about crypto, the results seem pretty good. @Vivaldi
@reflex We used to have a deal with Bing for search, which we no longer do. Thus we changed the default for those users that have never changed their default.
You can change back to Bing or you can select one of the others. I hope you will select one of the smaller search engines, that we have deals with, such as Startpage, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia or Qwant. Yahoo is also an option.
It was a bit jarring to have it change on it's own. I'll set it to duckduckgo as that's what my other browsers are set to. I wish Ecosia returned better results...
My team building our monitoring tools were certain that Google was the most common. For funsies I looked into connection logs to see what the most common browser logged in, and it was Edge.
The truth is most work laptops have Windows installed, and people choose the default browser.
Sadly, Startpage and DuckDuckGo are using Bing and Google catalogue in the background. They do help your privacy, but still return search results that start on scroll page 7 to contain non SEO / ad content (if at all).
do keep in mind the various biases involved in this poll. of which there are a few, including bias of samples (who's getting the poll?) and respondents may be more likely to answer polls (but may not be representative).
I'm not sure anyone at Apple ever actually used Apple Music. My use case is the following: - I start a radio, mixing songs I added to my library with related songs - A song I don't have in my library plays, and I happen to like it enough to want to add the song to my library. - Too bad, the song ended and the radio moved to the next song. The previous button is greyed out, there's no playlist page for this radio, and there's no Listening History available.
I'm absolutely confused by this behavior. Is it a licensing thing where songs can be played as part of a radio for cheaper than if they are presented in an actual playlist, even if it's automatically generated?
I wouldn't be surprised if there's licensing shenanigans at play, but I don't know about this particular situation for sure.
What I've seen, which I thought was incredible - with Tidal, some songs aren't able to be played via Chromecast, due to licensing issues. Apparently allowing sounds to be potentially amplified and wiggle the air that might also potentially be heard by a non-paying user is criminal copyright infringement - even though there's a million other ways to do it.
