@Khurram Wadee Timezones could be fine if there weren't so many weird exceptions making people who have to traverse them (including programmers) miserable. But as it stands they are a weird reminder of colonization with little to no practical benefits. The same way that timezones don't affect people who never cross them, having none wouldn't affect people who stay within a specific region. Jet lag would still exist, but portable clocks wouldn't have to change arbitrarily.
@Hypolite Petovan what would your alternative to timezones be that would not require sticking to a certain hour dictated by a specific jurisdiction and applying it worldwide though?
The current system is flexible enough to allow even increments of an hour difference (e.g. the time zone of Iran is UTC+3:30).
I kinda agree with the daylight savings time though. It's just a relic from a long-gone war.
@Cătă My alternative would be no timezone, and everybody uses UTC. What would change is business hours values. instead of opening between 7am and 9am worldwide, some would open at 07, some at 13, some at 22. And it wouldn't change anyone's habits. People would still keep trying to call others across the world on their downtime, jet lag would still be a thing since your body adapts to daylight, not time numbers.
What would change is that when you say a TV starts at 15, everybody would get it regardless of where they live. It could be early or late depending on people's local habits, but you wouldn't have to give 2 or three different time numbers depending on your target audience's timezones.
@Hypolite Petovan It would be weird to wake up at 22 to get to work and whatnot. Or to have the day end at noon or any time between morning and lunch. How could you call it a day this way? What about months or years? Would we still finish them in the middle of the day, or we would simply add a few extra hours to them? In the latter case, I don't see any difference to just take the UTC hour and add those hours to that instead.

That is a problem only for larger countries like the US, Russia, Canada and China. Many other countries in this world (including mine) only have a single timezone.

@Cătă No, my point is that you wouldn't have to take into account two different times if timezones were abolished. You still would have to care about only one time, the same way you currently are.
@Jerry on Friendica It is true, but changing a system is more costly politically than keeping it around even with well-known drawbacks. Which is why I don’t expect the timezones to disappear any time soon. I still have hope for removing the Daylight Savings Time within my lifetime though.
The problem would be that people's days would change while they're awake, and often working. I'm not sure it is a good idea to impose a global time on the vast majority for whom it's inappropriate.
@Khurram Wadee It’s a good point @Cătă raised but aside from a departure from today’s habits, I’m not sure it’s relevant. If I suggest you we meet on the 11th at 14:30, it will make sense in your local time context. Maybe you’d be asleep at that time so you would offer a different hour, possibly of a different day, and then it would make sense in my time context.

Hallo @Zora, die Abenteurerin , Willkommen im Fediverse ! Hier am Zwenkauer See haben wir einiges an Fosilien aus dem Boden geholt. Nachdem der Tagebau eingestellt wurde und die Landschaft gestaltet wurde, konnte man sich beim Hinsetzen auch schon mal auf einen Haifischzahn setzen (ist wirklich passiert )
@andreas Das klingt total interessant! Ich habe als Kind Fossilien in Steinbrüchen gesammelt.
Meine Eltern sind wegen meinem Interesse dafür, gern zu einem Urlaubsort mit Fossilien-Steinbruch in der Nähe gefahren.
Da konnte ich den ganzen Tag drin suchen und habe auch ein paar Fossilien gefunden. Haifischzähne waren auch dabei, genauso wie Belemniten, Schwämme, Ammoniten und Muscheln.
Das hat mein Interesse für prähistorische Tiere sehr verstärkt!

Allerdings kann ich zustimmen, das es da draußen Dinge gibt, von denen die meisten Menschen nichts wissen.
Jedenfalls könnte das erklären, warum die meisten Menschen es auch nicht wissen wollen. Wahrscheinlich ein Schutzmechanismus um nicht getötet zu werden, und um nicht dem Wahn zu verfallen, wenn sich in der Realität auf einmal ein Loch auf tut und immer größer und größer wird.
Gab ja schon ein paar Tipps, deswegen nur einer von mir: Man kann hier Hashtags folgen und interessante User in Listen zusammenfassen. Das finde ich sehr praktisch.

@Zora, die Abenteurerin Falls noch nicht bekannt. Du bewegst dich mit Mastodon im #Fediverse. Das Fediverse kann von unterschiedlichen Plattformen bedient werden. Diese Zeilen kommen z.B. von einem #Hubzilla Server. Hier kann man z.B. formatieren. Hat mehr Text zur Verfügung, hat gegenüber Mastodon ein, aus meiner Sicht, viel besseres Benachrichtigungssystem. Kurz: Sich mal im Fedi-Universum umzusehen macht durchaus Sinn.
Tatsächlich bin ich mir noch nicht sicher, ob der Zeichenvorrat hier ausreichend ist, für das was ich alles schreiben möchte.
Vielleicht wechsle ich tatsächlich zu einer Instanz die mehr Text erlaubt. Oder ich mache einen Blog auf. Mal sehen.

Für Community für ein bestimmtes Thema braucht es (hier) einen langen Atem. Vor allem eben auch präsent sein. Algo gibt es kaum. Außer dieses Hashtag Dinger.

Am interessantesten finde ich die verschiedenen Raptoren Arten. Alle diese Tiere zeichnen sich durch Neugierde und ein ausgeprägtes Sozialverhalten aus.
Die Tiere bei der Jagd zu beobachten, das wäre super interessant. Die Koodination in dem Rudel ist ähnlich, wie in einem Löwenrudel.

Rückwärts von der Straße aufs Grundstück finde ich ok, aber rückwärts vom Grundstück auf die Straße ist immer wieder heikel. Ebenso rückwärts aus der Parklücke auf die Straße mag ich nicht.
Also, es gibt Bestandsschutz für vorhandene Parkplätze. Es wird sich bemüht, bei neuen Projekten den Staßenverkehr für alle etwas sicher zu gestalten. Und das ohne Einschränkungen für die Autofahrer. I recently switched over to Vivaldi on desktop (Microsoft Surface Pro 9) as well as Android (Pixel 9 Pro). I was on the fence about making Vivaldi my default browser for a few months mainly due to inconsistent sync performance. The latency in sync was making it very hard to use as I switch between Android and Desktop a lot. Glad to see that 7.0 has improved the sync drastically. The sync performance is noticeably better in 7.0. But, I will be honest, it still has some room for improvements to be on par with Brave (not comparing to big tech browsers like Chrome or Edge). Sometimes I have to close the browsers on the desktop and the phone to let the sync trigger. I also have placed vivaldi:sync-internals on the side panel and use "Trigger GetUpdates" to sync the browsers manually. It works perfectly. But, an option in the browser at the top near the sync cloud to manually sync would be awesome. One more feature that I miss from Brave is the global media control button near the address bar, which makes it easy to control media playing in one of the tabs.
I absolutely admire Vivaldi's vision and mission. I would love to join the millions to be a part of this journey to promote and respect user privacy without compromising on innovative features. So tired of the big tech. Awesome work @Vivaldi

Man könnte noch etwas deutlicher hervorheben, dass die Wahlbeobachter gar nicht die Auszählung an sich bemängeln, sondern WIE die Stimmzettel dort hineingekommen sind. Wenn dabei betrogen worden sein sollte - wofür es starke Indizien gibt - dann könnte man die Stimmzettel noch 100mal nachzählen, ohne den Betrug zu bemerken. Daher finde ich, dass die Überschrift etwas in die Irre führt.

Do you mean to ask if the internet is filling up with AI generated content? Or whether or not AI summaries provide value to search results? Because AI summaries do not replace or change search results themselves, they are added to the results.
I dont think it's possible to quantify (beyond gut feeling...which is very biased and often wrong) what impact AI is having on search results. AI summaries can only be evaluated against what we know to be true. So there are difficulties there also without doing a well designed experiment.
I think the only truthful response anyone can give is "I don't know". But that's not an option in the survey.
This is actually why science was invented. People's subjective experiences are very often wrong. What we *think* we see often is at odds with reality. I'm wrong all the time because of my biases and preconceptions and this is why eyewitness testimony in a murder trial has to be supported with actual evidence.
Is the change you think you've seen been caused by AI? Other causative factors are at play. How do we distinguish among them?
@rspfau , a poll is actually for the purpose of asking people what they think. That is what I am interested in.
I do think AI has made results a lot worse. Partially because of the summaries and partially because there is a lot of AI generated content early in the results. I am finding it harder to find stuff I am looking for, that I know is there.
Something that I've been wondering the past several months is if anyone has attempted to *objectively* address the question of quality of search results. I dont even know if one can objectively test one search engine against another much less the past versus the present. Do you know of any efforts to do either of these?
@rspfau , I think it is hard to do really. Unless you can recognize AI and other SEO generated stuff. If there is more of that, the results are, IMHO, objectively worse. Most of the time one is not interested in AI stuff, but rather information from the source. Anything else is, objectively, worse.
My experience is that the summary is wrong or not accurate more often that not and clearly not the best answer. I have learned that trusting it for even the most basic of answers, such as which terminal a flight leaves from, to not be trustworthy.
As for Google, I don't see any difference in search results before or after AI was introduced. However, the AI-derived text that appears above the search results is annoying.
I made use of DDG's AI after I couldn't quite answer my hard question in the results and it basically came to the same conclusion as me several times. I think its worthwhile to use AI for questions of less importance to save some time. I haven't noticed any degeneration of ddg's search results.
Difficult to say IMHO. I rarely use AI for search but apparently it happens in the background a lot. If I search for a specific thing it can get worse (interpreting for a different search phrase) or better (actually finding things). Dedicated AI searches are also a mixed bag. I have bad hallucinations as well as sources I was unable to find the traditional way.
@AndreasSebayang , for me, the most visible parts when it comes to AI is the box at the top, where some answer is selected to be the best answer. This often gives a bad or inaccurate answer.
In addition to that are actual search results, that are AI generated. Often I will have to go down the list of search results to find what I was looking for. The AI generated results are pushing what I am looking for down on the list. Part of the issue is also that search engines are giving regency a big priority, which means that more static content will just disappear.
While I do understand the sentiment, I think the problem with search has been more the ads than anything else
Things like the AI overviews are bad, but search has been more or less powered by AI for a while, it's really just been this new bout of generative AI where they're really *saying* it out loud
But even without that GenAI, search results have been getting significantly worse for a bit now

The current system is flexible enough to allow even increments of an hour difference (e.g. the time zone of Iran is UTC+3:30).
I kinda agree with the daylight savings time though. It's just a relic from a long-gone war.

What would change is business hours values. instead of opening between 7am and 9am worldwide, some would open at 07, some at 13, some at 22. And it wouldn't change anyone's habits. People would still keep trying to call others across the world on their downtime, jet lag would still be a thing since your body adapts to daylight, not time numbers.
What would change is that when you say a TV starts at 15, everybody would get it regardless of where they live. It could be early or late depending on people's local habits, but you wouldn't have to give 2 or three different time numbers depending on your target audience's timezones.

How could you call it a day this way? What about months or years? Would we still finish them in the middle of the day, or we would simply add a few extra hours to them? In the latter case, I don't see any difference to just take the UTC hour and add those hours to that instead.
That is a problem only for larger countries like the US, Russia, Canada and China. Many other countries in this world (including mine) only have a single timezone.
Imo I find it easier to manage my local time into daily chunks this way than to take UTC into account.

But you have a point about the day number change, it would be weird for it to change at any point that isn't during night, although night shift people already are used to it.
In that regard, if you just had UTC to take into account it would be the same for you after the initial getting used to it period.
